Podcast: My Exact Recipe For a Top-20 Podcast

podcast

If you’re looking to start a podcast, then read on to finally find your way to use this spoken platform as a killer marketing tool.

In this solo Episode 100 of the Marketing Matrix Podcast, we’re celebrating the birthday of this podcast! I shared why I started this podcast, how I made episode generation sustainable for my business by hiring a team, and why consistency in content creation is the most important factor of success.

Here are some of the most notable takeaways:

A Podcast Is a Lead-Generation Tool

Before The Marketing Matrix Podcast launched, I struggled with publishing content that had any return on investment. Jamie Atkinson helped me realize that by starting a podcast, I could use it to help generate leads for my agency, which was a big piece that I was missing with my content at the time.

By bringing guests on, I could interview them so they could gain exposure, but then I could also ask them if they had someone running their Facebook ads already. If they weren’t, we could start the conversation about them hiring my agency.

This was a mutually beneficial way to build rapport and generate leads!

Hiring a Team Can Maximize Your Podcast Efforts

The first 10 episodes of this podcast were so much work, especially because my standard of excellence is so high. I continued to do everything myself for a while:

  • Finding guests
  • Messaging them
  • Getting them onto the podcast
  • Editing the episodes
  • Adding the intros
  • Putting the pieces together
  • Loading them onto my podcast host
  • Marketing the episode

It was exhausting. After the initial buzz died down, I even considered killing the podcast, because it wasn’t making any money.

However, I decided to double down to keep it alive. I used funds from my marketing agency to invest in a team to help me with management, editing, copywriting, and content distribution, and I haven’t looked back since.

Having a team and an organized process helps me focus on my contribution to the process: being the subject matter expert.

Consistency Is More Important Than Perfect Production

If you’re publishing rich content on a platform, consistency is key. In order to do so, you’ll have to focus on:

  • Distribution. Leverage your podcast efforts by repurposing content across various platforms and formats.
  • Content Strategy. Consider how you want to be seen in your industry. Do you only want to be a great interviewer, or do you also want to be a subject matter expert?

If you’re thinking about launching a podcast to up your lead gen strategy, consider how a team can help you with consistency and visibility.
